I think this crap.. I think Pat Metheny's pure selfish bi polar love of money is doing his thinking for him.
I was discusted when i saw a pre ticket purchase option on an email that looked like a K-tell pocket fisherman ad giving away signed cd's in exchange for a $250.00 seat. One might ask.. Who the hell does
he think he is? On top of a situation where you don't know if this ground breaking new release is going to be a step below Brght sized life...

I mean, the big Secret story here is that noone has said a word outside of the king of himself.

Why not let him allow a jazz critic from a major source hear it so that we can at the very least have
a reasonable expectation of if it carries any wieght of his past greatness.

Personally i feel rather insulted by this treat me like a child Bullshit.. I hate his manipulative calulations on
Orestrian and i dont feel like an appreciated fan who has bought his work since 30 years ago when i spent time wiht him and his group.

Brad,

I totally agree. Pat won't have any problem selling tickets for this tour even with the mystique that is surrounding the material. My point with giving away the tickets is that students just can't afford $60-$80 tickets anymore. This isn't about making sure the venue is full, but exposing Pat's influence on a new generation of musicians. I have spoke with Pat personally about this project and even he said that people that are very close to him don't quite understand the material. I don't think this has been the case with previous projects (maybe Zero Tolerance?).

Anyways, I would love to hear what you think of the tour when you see it.

I have never been to a metheny concert that wasn't completely sold out even at pretty large venues, so I don't think that giving away too many free tickets would make sense. Metheny has put out a lot of "ear candy" records (this is not a bad thing) and a lot of his fanbase came to him this way. But throughout his career he has also done a lot of grounbreaking and experimental projects. Usually his huge fan base will support these records and tours, and he may even add new fans who thought he was just a lolly pop salesman before. This guy KNOWS how to do successful tours and make good records. Hes been doing this stuff well for what 40 years almost?! I would definitely like a discounted or free ticket to one of his shows, but I will go regardless. Music students might be interested in pats rig or his ideas about music and thats great...BUT none of those things are really what makes his music what it is. There is a deeper personal story behind everything he plays. I think that when people are too interested in gear or theoretical aspects of music (which are important in their own right, granted) they are missing the more fundamental parts of making good music, which is something deeply personal and only realized by the individual.

Pretty Interesting ideas, Jason. I just wish I was in high school again so maybe I could catch a free show! I will say that I enjoy the Pat Metheny podcast "About the Music."

More artists should be doing that - it offers some great insights into Pat's creative process and his relationships with Lyle Mays, Gary Burton, and others.
